FATHER

Faithful portrait of our father,
trying always to do his best.
Spending daily time in prayer,
on behalf of the family, making requests.

Always on his knees before the Lord,
praying daily with kids in bed.
Then the prayer time, with his wife,
to rest in peace, with a clear head.

Teaching his children,
to trust and obey.
To have an anchor,
when they need to pray.

Holding out hope,
that they understand.
And one day to choose,
to live for the Promised Land.

Eternal values your father imparts,
seeds planted within the heart.
Watered and nurtured, one day to grow,
a holy life that is set apart.

Remain and abide in all God’s Love,
remember daily to seek God and pray.
The Lord knows our very needs,
and He supplies all, day by day.

Memorial Day: The Last Monday in May

A day of tribute, honor, & prayer,
to all those who left something there.
Not only those who gave it all,
but also those who saw one fall.

Those who were there and lost a friend,
have a memory that will never end.
Not only today, but everyday,
they take time to stop and pray.

War is tragedy that you can’t explain,
nobody knows who is to blame.
The price we pay is way too high,
especially when we say good-bye.

Nobody in war ever dies alone,
on the field, or here at home.
The military knocks at your door,
“I’m sorry, another casualty of war.”

What will ever pay the cost,
for the family that has suffered loss.
When all is given for this nation,
will a medal or citation.

The scars of war are not on the skin,
instead, the heart buried deep within.
Nothing anyone wants to talks about,
never able to pour it out.

We’re never the same as before,
for war cripples our very core.
We may come back in on piece,
but our memories will never cease.

So, for this Monday in the month of May,
take time to reflect and time to pray.
Remembering those who answered freedom’s call,
all gave some, some gave all.

Yet, in the midst of all this despair,
when the world is so unfair.
I find hope for life in only One,
and that is God’s very Son.

He’s the One who cares for me,
without Him, I wouldn’t be.
There’s nothing greater than His Grace,
He’s always there, whatever I face.

So trust Him in all you do,
He will always see you through.
He’ll never allow what you can’t bear,
He’ll shelter you in His Loving Care.

(This poem was originally published in 2014, but due to its popularity, we brought it back this year.)

MOTHER

Manages life from the moment of birth,
preparing the child for a life of self-worth.
She has a bond that took nine months to grow,
and every need in life, she will know.

Opens the world to this new child of life,
with godly examples of husband and wife.
This union is made in God’s own design,
with love and care that will never resign.

Trust is a trait that’s high on the chart,
it’s your character speaking from your heart.
It’s learned and grows, speaking about you,
it’s your word and truth in all that you do.

Heart is the center of your very being,
it’s what you speak and what people are seeing.
Your heart is always bound in what you treasure,
and your mom’s devotion is surely a pleasure.

Explains the challenges and issues you’ll face,
teaches you God’s love and amazing grace.
Explains about God and teaches you prayer,
shows you that God is faithful and always there.

Respect is a quality you need to sow,
your honor and word help it to grow.
When your word comes forth, straight and true,
respect will follow in all that you do.

Easter 2016: The Son-Rise

Death is final,
for both you and I.
And people gather,
for a last good-bye.

But there is a future,
for us to hold.
And it leads us,
to streets of gold.

The price was paid,
and debt wiped clean.
The future enables us,
to hope and dream.

The grave is conquered,
the stone is rolled away.
In a tomb,
He did not stay.

He’s given us life,
what we couldn’t do.
Paid the price,
to make everything new.

He destroyed the bondage,
of death and hell.
And opened the door,
of our hopeless cell.

What more could we ask?
He has done it all!
We have a choice,
just answer His call.

He wants to live,
within our heart.
Clean out the junk,
and set us apart.

So invite Him in,
renew life today.
With Jesus in your heart,
you’ve now found the Way.

Open the hotel,
and give Him the keys.
He’ll clean every room,
and do it with ease.

A Month Ending in 29

Six, twelve, eighteen, twenty-four,
do you know what these numbers are for?
Every year we lose a quarter,
and every year is a quarter day shorter.

And after four years are up,
we get to add our quarters up.
Our extra day is 2/29,
an extra day sounds just fine.

It is just a matter of hours,
that makes up twenty-nine.
Because the day only happens when,
every four years fall in line.

I never traced the mathematics,
to find out how really true.
I just came to accept it,
like others, me and you.

It always happens in an election year,
and I think I know why.
It gives us another day,
to separate the truth from a lie.

We get to hear them argue,
who should be President.
The extra day is to figure,
what they actually meant.

The extra day would be nice,
if we could use it to relax.
But this year, 2016,
is a work day, for a fact.

So an extra day of work,
does not make life any better.
Unless it’s used for family time,
and a day of beautiful weather.

If they would let me decide,
then it would only be fair.
Let people celebrate,
whatever way they care.

This day should actually become,
a holiday celebrated worldwide.
The entire world to stand for peace,
and be united, side by side.

One day every four years,
when the whole world could get along.
Forget about our selfish problems,
embrace the good, forget the wrong.

Maybe it would catch on,
being only one day long.
And all the world could sing,
“We are Family,” the song.

Should Cupid Quit?

After Cupid had a hard year,
he finally decided to pack his gear.
He sold his bows and arrows,
he would not work any more tomorrows.

He lived his life according to plan,
after all, he was his biggest fan.
He was always proud when it turned out right,
and people had futures ever so bright.

But with his symptoms of being old,
and February being a month so cold.
His retirement would be a welcome change,
and maybe a home in the open range.

And the choices are many for him to decide,
yet wherever he goes, he’ll not be able to hide.
He was a celebrity- of this no doubt,
and he was someone who had some clout.

“Maybe I’ll open a business or so,
it will help to give me somewhere to go.
I have experience in the field of dating,
and with that background, there will be no waiting!”

“I might work for my good friend Thor,
or maybe be romantic and open a jewelry store!
Or maybe just rest and take it slow,
but that may be boring- I just don’t know!”

“Decisions, decisions, I can’t make up my mind,
nothing seems right for whatever I find.
Maybe I’m hasty and I’m acting too quick,
all these choices- what should I pick?”

“Maybe I’ll go see the doctor today,
listen and see what he has to say.
Maybe there is medicine to put me on track,
and I might even get my old job back.”

“I brought joy and happiness to many hearts,
perfect aim with my love darts.
If I give up, what will they do,
it will be sad without an ‘I love you!'”

“The doctor was able to give me a lift,
ripped up the bill and said, ‘It’s my gift!’
Not many people work just one day a year,
and bring to people so much cheer.”

The Reason for the Season

Sometimes thoughts seem a long way off,
and they don’t really make any sense.
My mind seems cluttered with daily life,
my body and thoughts, tired and tense.

My mind is raveled in a giant knot,
which loose end to pull, I don’t know.
Chances are, it can’t get worse,
I have to do something to unlock the flow.

But then, maybe the words were spoken,
beyond my listening ear.
And I was too tired,
to turn my head to hear.

But out of the heart, the mouth speaks,
it is not an audible voice.
Words are implanted by the Holy Spirit,
and are used only by His choice.

They are given for wisdom and inspiration,
as God speaks to us.
He also speaks through the written Word,
and that makes life a plus.

So even when life seems down,
and doesn’t seem to fit.
Receive a Christmas present,
God’s Son, the Perfect Gift.

He’ll lift you by a Mighty Hand,
out of the miry clay.
And set your feet on higher ground,
firmly planted to stay.

So accept the Gift that God offers,
and make this a joyous season.
And after all, we need to remember,
Jesus is the Reason for the Season.

Remember Jesus Christ,
the Solid Rock you stand.
All other ground,
is sinking sand.
